The Ministerial Forum may seek scientific and technical advice from the Scientific Advisory Panel in relation to the identification of requirements for the effective monitoring of the condition of the rivers and catchments within the Lake Eyre Basin Agreement Area and the establishment of programs to meet those requirements.

The primary role of the Scientific Advisory Panel is to provide relevant, timely and high quality scientific advice to the Ministerial Forum on matters relevant to the management of water and related natural resources within the Agreement Area, consistent with the spirit and intent of the Agreement. In particular, the Scientific Advisory Panel provides advice on monitoring the condition of rivers and catchments as required by Clauses 7.1 and 10.4 of the Agreement.

The Scientific Advisory Panel alerts the Ministerial Forum to current knowledge gaps and the strategic scientific investigations required for underpinning future management decisions in relation to the Basin. The Scientific Advisory Panel also has a role in the development of policies and strategies under the Agreement and the implementation of the proposed Lake Eyre Basin Rivers Assessment.
